Course Information
Year 9
This course is aimed at those who have a basic understanding up to Level 1 of Te Aho Arataki Marau. It will develop foundation Te Reo Māori of Levels 1 and 2 of Te Aho Arataki Marau mō te ako i Te Reo Māori and explore Tikanga Māori with specific links to karakia, mihimihi, pepeha, pūrākau, kai Māori. By the end of Level 2, students can understand Te Reo Māori that contains well-rehearsed sentence patterns and familiar vocabulary and can interact in predictable exhanges. They can read and write straightforward sentences. They are aware of, and understand, some of the typical cultural conventions that operate in interpersonal communication. Students are developing an awareness of the processes involved in learning Te Reo Māori.
Year 10
Learners can cope with a variety of routine situations when talking to Māori speakers. They can see familiar language with some flexibility and pick up some new language from its context. They can read and write simple notes and short letters, and fill out simple forms. They can use and respond to language, including directions and requests, that are likely to occur in familiar Māori settings. They are becoming more confident in using a range of language learning strategies. Students further develop the pepeha into whaikōrero while adding two new karakia to their repertoire.
Year 11 (Level 1)
Students must have taken Te Reo Māori in Year 10, completing the course to a satisfactory level with the HoD’s discretion. This includes attendance as well as academic assessments.
Year 12 (Level 2)
Students must have taken Te Reo Māori in Year 11 completing the course to a satisfactory level and achieved all internal standards along with 50% of external standards from the Level 1 NCEA exams. A satisfactory attendance record for the year is also very necessary.
Year 13 (Level 3)
Students must have taken Te Reo Māori in Year 12 completing the course to a satisfactory level and achieved all internal standards along with 50% of external standards from the Level 2 NCEA exams. A satisfactory attendance record for the year is also very necessary.
