St John's College - Department of Design and Technology
Technology at St. John’s College is one of the eight compulsory learning areas included in The New Zealand Curriculum. The Technology curriculum (Levels 1 to 5 and then NCEA Levels 6 to 8) consists of three strands – Technological Practice, the Nature of Technology and Technological Knowledge – and eight achievement objectives fit within those three strands. The aim is that teaching and learning aligns clearly with these three strands and supports the general development of a student’s technological literacy. All three strands work together to set the overall direction for learning in Technology and these are spread across all focused technological disciplines such as Digital Technology (TEC), Materials Technology (MTT), and Food Technology (FTT and Culinary Arts - CUL).
Design and Visual Communication (DVC) (Graphics and Design (GXD)) is a challenging, design-focused course, with creative elements. It has a clear pathway through all levels of NCEA and would suit any student interested in a design focused career, such as Product design, Media design, Architecture or Design Engineering.
YEAR 9
Modules:
Student’s study four technological modules for one term each, over the year. Each area of Technology is assessed against the levels of The New Zealand Curriculum. The rotations, in no particular order, are:
- Materials Technology
- Digital Technology
- Food Technology
- Process and Production Technology
Students can also choose to study for half a year:
- Graphics and Design – Design and Visual Communication (DVC). This is the only completely new subject that students will not have been offered at Intermediate school, which is offered at St. John’s College (also continues until Year 13 at NCEA Levels 1 to 3 and is a University entrance subject).
YEAR 10
Students can choose from the following to continue with as an option subject:
- Materials Technology
- Digital Technology
- Food Technology
- Graphics and Design (Design and Visual Communication (DVC)).
YEARS 11 TO 13
There are three NCEA pathways within the Department of Design and Technology that run from Level 1 to Level 3, and one at Level 1. These are:
- Design and Visual Communication (Graphics and Design): this is also a University Entrance subject.
- Culinary Arts: credits for Hospitality Certificate as well as Levels 1 to 3 NCEA.
- Materials Technology: Building, Unit Standards course. Credits for BCITO and BCAT, as well as Levels 1 to 3 NCEA.
- Digital Technology: credits for Level 1 NCEA.
