2017 NEW ZEALAND SECONDARY SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS - DOUBLE GOLD - JNR AND SNR OPEN WINNERS!!
The junior and senior Canoe polo teams had worked hard after the recent regional events. During summer tournament week they traveled to Palmerston North to compete in the National Secondary School finals.
The juniors entered the competition as strong favourites and it quickly became clear that their size, speed and skill was enough to win a national title. The focus was playing as well as they could and playing with process and urgency. Throughout pool play there were 39 goals scored for, and only 9 conceded which reflected the domination of other teams. Entering into the final against Karamu High School it was important that the team continue to do as they had been doing. A strong committed start allowed for everyone to get good game time and an 11-3 result showed the gap between the National Champions and everyone else.
The senior boys were grouped in what was known as the pool of death. 4 strong teams that were all capable of beating each other. Draws against Havelock High School, Fielding High School and a 7-2 win against Middleton Grange was enough to finish top of the pool and be drawn to play Napier Boys’ High School in the cross over semi-final. A commanding 8-2 win in the semi-final gave the team the confidence and belief to approach the Final against Palmerston North Boys High School. Having conceded an early goal the SJC boys quickly got into action and scored 3 well-constructed goals to lead 3-2 at half time. After a controlled 2nd half and holding a 4-3 lead going into the last minute it was a fitting way to end with scrambling defense and effort to seal the victory.
It was a great result for SJC Canoe Polo to win their 1st National golds at the same tournament. SJC is only the 3rd school in the history of the competition to win both junior and senior titles in the same year. It was last done 15 years ago. Jayden Petersen and Liam Brunton were named in the tournament team. Both teams showed a positive approach to playing the game with effort and skill and believing in TEAM.
A big thanks must go to Mark Mills and Natalie Carter who helped with the weekend. A great effort by all. Well done keep working hard.

2017 NATIONAL TEAM TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS, WHANGANUI - Bronze Medal in the U16 Boys grade.
Jamie Nichols came out the water in the main group of swimmers in about 7th Place, he gave the transmitter to Max Williams who got on the bike and cut this down to 2nd place with in the first lap, on his 2nd turn he fell from the bike, damaging the front wheel, his knee, shoulder and elbow. It took three minutes to get the wheel out and back on the bike, and he had dropped to 13th place. Within a couple of laps he managed to pass the other teams finishing in 8th place. Mark Day ran out of his skin to catch and pass many other teams and help the team finish in 3rd place. Fantastic example of guts and determination to collect the Bronze medal!

ECNI CROSS COUNTRY RESULTS WEDNESDAY 8th JUNE
Junior Boys (4km) dominated their race and Mark Day led from the gun to finish in a race record of 13:02 (old record was 13:12). Hamish Ross ran a good tactical race to outlast Gisborne Boys’ runner for 2nd in 13:39 (huge PB) and Max Ireland ran a good PB (14:17) in 7th, to secure the 3 man team win and defend their 2013 title. Mark and Hamish were both selected in the ECNI team to run the relay at NZSS next weekend, Max may also gain selection in this team. We are awaiting word from selectors. Senior Boys (6km) - Kane Elms ran a very good tactical race, making the Lindisfarne runner do a lot of work into the wind and then kicked away in the last 1500m to finish 2nd (behind Bradley Christensen NBHS) in 20:45, another big PB. Ethan Kerins and Richard Russell ran with the main group and ran very good times finishing 8th & 11th. These 3 finished 2nd in 3 man team behind Napier Boys’. Liam O'Rorke (14th), Blake Sullivan-Hill (16th) and Braden Kelly (18th) were a little out of sorts (couple of them struggling with injury), but managed to secure 2nd place in 6 man team event. Kane gained selection for ECNI relay team at nationals, and Ethan may have an outside chance for this team depending on availability of others. In Year 9 3km race all ran well and recorded PB times by about 20 sec or so. These guys are working well and improving with each race: Fred Devereux 13th (10:43), Andrew Oliver 23rd (12:09), Lachlan Ross 24th (12:11), Alex van Hooijdonk 28th (12:38) We look forward to the NZSS Champs in Rotorua this weekend (18th/19th June).
