St John's College - Sports . . .

Sport is an integral part of a boys’ school. It does not build character, it reveals it. At St. John’s College we cater for the needs of all our students. This includes compulsory sport for all Year 9 and 10 students in the winter; and the pursuit of excellence in our main sporting codes. It is supported by fi rst class coaches to help young athletes attain their sporting goals. Introduced as a Gifted and Talented Programme, The Sports Institute was founded in 2014 to support such athletes.

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS
During the course of the year there are a number of occasions where the school recognises and applauds the sporting achievements of its students. This applies equally across all codes whether they are provided within St John’s College or in outside clubs. Sporting achievement forms can be collected from the Sports Co-ordinators office, or emailed to the Sport co-ordinator.  Whilst we have our finger pretty much on the pulse it is important to keep us informed.
SPORTS NOTICEBOARD
The St John’s College sports notice boards are an important source of information and are updated regularly with draws, results, team lists, upcoming events and courses. Students at St John’s College should check the notice board regularly.
The daily notices which are available at house time daily also contain important sports information
In the past few years some students have sometimes over committed themselves to a wide range of sport and cultural activities without the necessary planning and preparation required for fitting everything in. In this booklet we are attempting to provide some information so students and parents will know what is involved in each activity, costs, time, uniform and commitment that is required. Students in consultation with their parents/caregivers can make an informed choice about what they will do.
Our suggestion is that a student will struggle to manage any more than TWO sports activities in each season, summer/winter and still complete the required homework and family activities.

COACHES AND MANAGERS
With many teams representing St John’s College each year it is vital that we have parent and community involvement in coaching and managing teams. All assistance is encouraged and supported. If you believe you possess a skill set which would be of value to St John’s College sport please don’t hesitate in contacting us or making yourself known to our Sports Co-ordinator at the Year 9 parents evening.
It is vitally important that parents support their son’s involvement in all aspects of sport. If at any stage you have queries or concerns please take the time to contact our Sports Co-ordinator, Teacher in Charge of Sport or the Principal so the correct pathways can be followed.
SPORTS INSTITUTES
Sport Institute classes run through the year in Rugby, Football, Cricket, Basketball, Golf & Canoe Polo. These are specialized programmes that students are selected for from a trial process. The institutes aim to expose our students to quality coaching & develop strong fundamentals and work habits. Close academic monitoring ensures that students must perform in class first.
It is important that parents contact us immediately if they have concerns about the balance of classroom and Institute commitments.
Institute athletes are expected to purchase an Institute training top and are expected to wear these to training sessions.
A parent student information evening is planned early in Term 1 where programme details are outlined and questions can be answered.

TRADITIONAL SPORTS EXCHANGES
Our top sports teams have annual games against St Patrick’s College Wellington, St John’s College Hamilton, Francis Douglas Memorial College, New Plymouth, Bishop Viard College Porirua, Hato Paora College Feilding and St Peter’s College Palmerston North.

ANNUAL SPORTS EXCHANGE DATES
Hato Paora - Away 2nd May
St Peter’s College Palmerston North - Away 16th May
St Patrick’s College - Home  22nd/23rd May

SPORTS UNIFORM
Uniform requirements will be kept to a minimum with some uniform in some codes being provided by the College. The correct wearing of uniform is non-negotiable as Code Associations and St John’s College believe in being well presented. Where the College provides a student with uniform they must sign out the uniform and return the same piece at the end of a season. Uniform provided by the College is not to be worn outside of competition. Loss or damage of the uniform will result in a replacement cost being charged.  A cleaning charge will be imposed if the uniform is returned dirty.
Where only playing shirts are provided students are to wear their blue PE shorts & socks can be purchased from the uniform store.
Students are encouraged to purchase a warm up T shirt for their selected codes. These could be ordered with uniform orders or an additional order will be placed early in 2016.
SPORT COSTS
Students at St John’s College have available to them a wide range of summer and winter sporting activities. The school management and Board of Trustee’s wish to retain this range of options but it is not possible to cover all sporting costs within the College budget. Registration fees are charged to assist with subsidising association fees, uniform, turf and official fees. If need be we would encourage automatic payments to be established through the office.
