St John's College - Art . . .

STAFF
Mr Don Dickson
: Head of Department
Teaching; all levels from Year 9 through to Year 13 and scholarship.

JUNIOR SCHOOL PROGRAMME
Year 9 - Art is a ‘half year option’ that will either run through terms one and two or terms three and four.  Students cover a range of foundation skills such as formal drawing lessons, still life drawing and painting, landscape drawing and painting, Maori art and some International modern art such as ‘Pop Art’. Students will also get to experience a range of mediums such as; Pencil, paint, charcoal and Indian ink.
Year 10 - Art is a ‘full year option’ and students look at a range of different artist models from around the world and work through a series of ‘Self Identity’ projects. Students will look at different styles of painting, different art movements and the techniques and methods from established practice and incorporate these ideas into their own work

SENIOR  PROGRAMME
Level One Art - Returning students at this level will have already completed the research element of a 6 credit Internal Achievement Standard based on ‘Te Matau a Maui’ or ‘The Hook of Maui’; a Maori korero where Maui fishes up the North Island from his Waka (the South Island). Hawkes Bay is the fish hook in the korero and also what students will carve from bone. After the carving process, another research and painting component looking at local landscapes and design concludes the project. While the students have been carving, photographs have been taken of their individual hands, using the carving tools. This becomes the basis of the following Internal Achievement Standard worth 4 credits. This project looks at a range of media usage like; pen, pencil, charcoal, Indian ink, paint and mixed media. This acts as a precursor to the External Achievement Standard which in its essence is based on a ‘Range of Media’ with evidence of research focused on established practice. This is worth 12 credits and completes the 22 credit programme.

Level Two Art - The Level Two program requires the students to look at ‘Personal Art and Artists’. A newly designed project consisting of two Internal Achievement Standards totaling 8 credits. These projects allow the students to choose their own subject matter and it also gives them the choice to look at ‘Artist Models’ they are interested in to influence their work. Techniques and methods are developed through the study of media application and investigation. Drawing and painting studies are created individually and then through the study of the artist models, the two personalities are combined to create new art works. The remainder of the course is spent creating their individual portfolios which is the External Achievement Standard and worth 12 credits
Level Three Painting and Scholarship - This programme consists of extensive artist model research and painting development. The course is started with a 4 credit Internal Achievement Standard focusing on the idiosyncratic methods of established artists and using these to develop individual styles and techniques. The Internal has been designed as a stepping stone into the External Achievement Standard which is worth 14 credits and the opportunity to gain a Painting Scholarship.

Art Department 2018 . . .

What an exciting year for the Art Department, with so much talent coming up through the ranks.

With a good number of excellences in the External Achievement Standards in 2017, this has put us in a good position to keep developing our scholarship programme. There are nine students working through the Level Three programme this year and six of these students will be entering the scholarship standard in the hope of gaining the desired results.

The junior programmes are running smoothly and there are good numbers in the Year 9 and 10 classes. The year 10 students have been enjoying adding to the projects each year with ‘Idea Share’ sessions and the opportunity to design projects they are interested in. This keeps them engaged and helps support and foster their individual creativity. Like we have always said “we can teach the students skills, but individual creativity comes from within”.

The unique thing about our senior programmes is the opportunity for ‘choice’. Students get to choose their individual subject matter and create work and has specific meaning to them. This keeps them engaged and enthusiastic about their work and working to a level which would challenge practising artists.
