What Will I Study?
The English Programme utilizes the Achievements Objectives set at Level 4-5 of the document English in the New Zealand Curriculum. It builds on work already achieved at Intermediate School level.
Running through the course are the three basic strands: Written Language, Oral Language, and Visual Language.
The Topics covered are:
• Journal Writing, in which writing skills are developed in a variety of styles.
• The development of a personal Research Topic, and research methods using the resources of a library.
• A Film Study, involving visual language and the cinematic techniques.
• Debating to help improve skills of public speaking.
• The Novel Study involves literature-based units using three novels.
• The study of Poetry, using a variety of poems and poetic techniques.
• A Thematic Unit, which incorporates several skills based around a particular theme.
• Technologies, the use of computer skills in the development of a unit of work.
• Drama, a text that allows students to participate actively.

What Do I Need To Have Already Studied?
It is hoped that students will have had an introduction to the above skills in Intermediate School and Year 9 will build on these skills.
Where Does This Subject Lead?
This subject leads to further English at higher levels throughout the College and forms an integral part of many aspects of study at school and beyond.
