Physical  Education     Year 9

 

What Will I Study?

The course covers a wide range of large and small ball activities ranging from basketball to cricket. In the first term, the swimming unit emphasis is on stroke development, water fitness and survival techniques. There is an introduction to Athletics, Run, Jump, and Throw. The Fitness Studies Unit incorporates aspects of Sports Choice. It coincides with the change of season. Benefits of exercise, warm up and stretching, jump rope, circuit training and orienteering are included.  Results of fitness and skills test are recorded in an attempt to build a physiological profile of the student during his time at the College. The student’s are also exposed to Te Reo Kori.

 

What Skills Will I Learn?

Skills include, striking, catching and throwing. Exposure is also given to some non – traditional activities.

 

Where Does This Subject Lead?

It leads on to a further study of Physical Education as a practical subject up to Year 11and as an academic option for NCEA Level 1 through to NCEA Level 3. In Years 12 and 13 it is an option for Sixth Form Certificate and Bursary. There is also a Year 13 Coaching Class.

What Will I Study?

The emphasis of this course is on Friendship, Smoking, Alcohol and Sexuality. The Friendship aspect looks at personal identity and self worth.  The smoking aspect  looks at historical perspectives and peer pressure. The alcohol aspect looks at the effect of alcohol on the well being of the person. Sexuality aspect encourages the student to explore issues associated with puberty and developing sexuality.

The course fully encompasses the physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual dimensions of a persons growth.

 

What Skills Will I Learn?

The main aims of the programme are to develop assertiveness,  increase personal and interpersonal skills, personal management, problem solving and develop strategies to withstand pressure.

 

Where Does This Subject Lead?

Health Education is not provided in Year 10.

 

Stationary Requirements

All Year 9 students are required to purchase a work booklet costing $3.50.

What Will I Study?

In the first term, the swimming unit emphasis is on stroke development, water fitness, survival and flotation techniques. There is an introduction to Racket Sports. Two Fitness blocks encourage the development of physical fitness and leads into the components that make up fitness. Foster student’s personal and social development through experiences involving Adventure Based Activities. Have experiences in a variety of oval ball codes and develop aspects related to minor game situations. Development of their bodies' potential in movement and gymnastics.

 

What Skills Will I Learn?

Skills include striking, kicking, catching and throwing. Other skills learnt include cooperation, trust, leadership, communication, problem solving, teamwork, developing confidence, game strategies, tactics and evasive skills.

 

Where Does This Subject Lead?

Leads on to further study of Physical Education in Years 11, 12 and 13
NCEA Level 1 option through to NCEA Level 3.
Offered in Year 12 as Practical PE - this is intended to be a lead-in course to Level 2.
